It's Time for a Spacelift!

SPACELIFT
January 14 - February 5, 2011
Curated by Kristin Bly
Opening Reception
Friday, January 14 6:00p-11:00p
Additional Hours
Saturday, January 15 12:00p-5:00p
Sunday, January 16 12:00p-4:00p
And by appointment through February 5.
Ever notice how some memories, like fine wines, get better with time—how some narratives, when relived, are revived? It’s like a memory upgrade, it’s new and improved. It’s been cleaned-up, like a wish come true.
We exercise these emotional improvements in a variety of contexts—it’s with the people that come in and out of our lives, it’s our experience with places and things, sometimes it’s related to a very specific fleeting event. And, really, it’s no surprise that we do all this. It’s rather natural. Just like the tenets of any self-respecting historical fiction, it’s practically an obligation to inject an existing tale with some umph!
Too, this peppering-up the past does not always correspond to something that began as an overly warm sensation. Sometimes, even as a coping mechanism, we give a memory a facelift to make it less ugly and more palatable for the present. “It wasn’t that bad,” we’ll say. Either way, tall-tale enhancements are tell-tale signs of our interest in recalling and recounting the past with a polished patina.
Spacelift is just that. It’s an exhibition addressing the notion that some memories get better with time—it’s the lifting up of the spaces in our minds. Spacelift artists approach their content and subject matter with certain levity, often (re)presenting things back, improved (upon) with dreamy optimism. They are navigators of remembrances, and their art is a scrapbook of the bygone, embellished with a boost of desire. Some works reference deeply personal stories, lending themselves to very specific autobiographies. Others lift-off more from popular culture, reminding us, in the spirit of Debord, how our impressions of the past (and the present) are inextricably shaped by the bombardment of mediated messages and the branded memories of “exactly” how things have come and gone.
Spacelift is a reconfiguring of reminiscences and a bolstering of the backlogged. It’s an exhibition that, as a whole, gives us a colorful overall story made-up of individually retold tales. It’s a compendium of past accounts, a veritable pulp fiction—all remastered and gussied-up to make for an even richer stream of narratives. Spacelift is pure hyperbole, and it doesn’t get any better than that—at least not until the next time the story is told…

Dark Matters, Light Sources
Right now, artists Dante Rodriguez and Andy Curlowe are at the gallery putting together their show Dark Matters, Light Sources. Not only is putting together a show hard work, but imagine if you're also one of the artists in the show? More hard work!
Come on out this Friday, September 25th anytime from 6p-11pm and congratulate Dante and Andy on their new show!
About the show:
DARK MATTERS, LIGHT SOURCES is each artist’s personal reflections and responses to man’s relationship with nature. The landscape is a living entity that is in constant flux by its doing or our own. Curlowe addresses this dissonance by stating “with all that we subject our world to, our landscape is also evolving and changing….is nature making a counter path to our development?” In his dioramas and drawings he illustrates the struggle of man’s design onto nature. The hidden mysteries experienced in nature are explored in Rodriguez’s work. His use of animal, human and geometric hybrid forms in his paintings portray a peculiar bond filled with ambiguity and open ended narratives. There is a psychological resonance shared in the works by both artists that cast a shadow of uncertainty on the relationship between man and nature. Was this disharmony always present? Is it a modern day creation? Nevertheless, their imagery presents that it is not the natural order of things.

Need Some Clarification?

Our next show Clear Signs opens Friday, August 20th from 6:00-10:00pm. Organized by William Schwartz and Joe Ayala, Clear Signs features the art of seven artists, Jason Byers, Jeffry Chiplis, Jim Karpinski, Bill Radawec, William Schwartz, Robert Thurmer and Ibojka Toth.
from neon sculpture to abstract painting, to politically-charged, conceptual installations and prints - this show is... sure to dazzle the eyes and mind. Organizer and participant William Schwartz gave the artists no criteria beyond the show’s title of "Clear Signs." Says Schwartz, "I'm very excited to be showing with a few of my favorite artists, at my favorite new art spot in town. [From the editor: Wall Eye Gallery did not pay William to say that. (LOL!)] I can't wait to see what everyone brings to the table."
PLEASE NOTE: Some material may not be suitable for children
Aside from the opening on Friday, we'll also be open Saturday, August 21st from 12:00-6:00pm Sunday, August 22 from 12:00-5:00pm. Can't attend any of the three days? We're also open by appointment through September 10th. Call or e-mail us to set up an appointment!

Preparing for Voices
The artwork arrived at the gallery, and it was exciting to see the photos for the first time. One by one, each photo came out of its box. Each pristine photo telling a story of a life many of us know nothing about. Lives that have seen and experienced heartbreak we could not imagine. And after all of this, they are now living in our cities. They are our neighbors and learning about life in America.
The photography exhibit will be at Wall Eye Gallery, the documentary will show at West Side Ecumenical Ministry Reinberger Auditorium, and the reception as well as art from the Refugee Artisan Co-op will be at Saigon Plaza. Each location is within a very short walking distance from each other.
Please join us this Friday in welcoming and learning about the families who have graciously welcomed the photographers, Steve Cagan, Gabriel Gonzalez, and Donald Black, to document their lives. And let's celebrate the hard work of the artists and organizers who have worked together to bring you a beautiful photo exhibit and engaging documentary about the families. We'll all learn together.

In celebration of Women's History Month and National Craft Month, this exhibition shares the work of ten artists who knit, sew, weave, embroider, bead, and crochet. These crafts were long considered to e traditional, domestic, and "women's work" that many women were expected to learn. For generations these beautiful techniques were passed down with the main intent of taking care of family and filling a home. We knitted and sewed items to clothe our families. We wove, embroidered, and crocheted to fill our homes with intricacy and love. In Undomesticated, we honor this heritage through modern interpretations of necessity-driven set of skills as a means of artistic expression.

Boldfigures
January 22 – February 7, 2010
Works by
Hannah Verbeuren,
Ken Nevadomi, Dante Rodriguez,
Barbara Konrad, and Claudio Orso-Giacone
Curated by Dante Rodriguez
Boldfigures is a group show of artists from the northeast Ohio region working in photography, painting, drawing, and printmaking who use the human figure as their main subject or inspiration for their work. The human form has always captivated artists’ imagination as a source for storytelling or to express inner emotions and ideas that provide meaning or insight to their works of art. This collection of paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs display a strong emphasis on the human form or animal figure through exaggerated forms, bodily actions, or boldly delineated lines by the whim of the artist’s brushstrokes. Whether searching for personal meaning, documenting current state of affairs, or expressing everyday life, these artists share the recognition of the endless possibilities and potential
of the human figure.
As always, the lower level will be open along with the boutique featuring many other artists!
Artists' Reception:
Friday, January 22nd 6:00pm-11:00pm
Also open:
Saturday, January 23rd 12:00pm-6:00pm
Sunday, January 24th 12:00pm-5:00pm
